Is your stay-at-home wife skimming at each purchase?

One of the best kept secrets of stay-at-home spouses is a means for skimming a bit of extra cash off of ordinary transactions. By taking advantage of the cash back feature when making purchases, wives are able to grab a bit of cash each time they make a purchase to use towards their own wants.

The trick is quite widespread, with wives frequently showing each other how to play the game. Still, for as many wives understand and play the game, the number of husbands aware of the skim is incredibly low.

How it works

Whenever you use your joint debit card at a point of sale terminal, you are often provided with the option to get cash back. If the total cost of your grocery run was $113 for example, then you could request $20 cash back, bringing the total to $133. This is often a small enough difference where most husbands would not notice, even if they were tracking purchases on the bank account.

Since stay-at-home wives are normally responsible for certain household purchases, they are expected to make a number of these transactions on a monthly basis. Many have discovered ways to perpetuate the game and even cover their tracks.

One popular method for maximizing the cash back skim is to make several smaller purchases each month rather than one large one. That way, you can request an extra $10 or $20 back on each purchase. Otherwise, larger cash back draws might be noticed by the working spouse.

A popular method for covering the cost of cash back is the use of coupons. On a $150 grocery run, redeeming $13 in coupons and requesting $20 cash back would only result in a net increase of $7 on the total tab.

For stay-at-home wives who are not employing this approach, we do not necessarily recommend it. It is one thing if your husband turns a blind eye or tacitly agrees to your scheme. However, deception and dishonesty rarely are healthy for a marriage.

If you are a working spouse, then you should understand where your money is going. If there are no serious money problems or disagreements, then there is probably little harm in the activity. However, if money has been tight and there have been signs of overspending, then this is precisely the type of budget-busting mayhem that can ruin you both financially.

Oddly enough, the activity appears to be mostly limited to stay-at-home wives. Perhaps stay-at-home husbands are not aware of it. Maybe they are already embarrassed by not being the traditional bread winner and don’t want to push the issue. I do believe though that the biggest reason is that men who stay at home are not as social with other stay-at-home husbands as most female homemakers are. They just don’t know how it works.

So perhaps this story is more of a shout out to those working husbands who are wondering where their money is going. Or maybe it is a hint to those stay-at-home husbands who are in the dark. Whatever the case, I am happy to spread the word for educational purposes!
